Drains

How do I remove my bathroom sink drain stopper for cleaning?

If a stopper does not lift straight out, it is being held in by the horizontal rod. Behind the drain pipe under the sink is a horizontal rod connected to the lift rod via the strap. The horizontal rod is held in place by a nut. Remove the nut and pull the horizontal rod straight away from the pipe about an inch. The stopper should now come free of the
drain.

How do I remove my tub drain stopper for cleaning?

There are two types of tub drain stoppers - lift & turn and toe tap.

Lift and Turn

The lift & turn stopper for the bathtub unscrews counterclockwise while in the full up position.

Toe Tap

The toe tap stopper also unscrews counterclockwise while in the full up position.  However, the cap may unscrew from the plunger assembly before the entire stopper comes out. In that case, there is a nut that will be exposed and can be used to unscrew the plunger assembly from the drain.

If either of these is "spinning" without unscrewing, the threads are stripped and you would need to exert upward pressure while unscrewing in hopes of uncoupling this from the bath waste. If that doesn't work you would have to unscrew the bath waste flange from the drain pipe.

This will require access under the tub.

How do you stop the rubber tail piece gasket and nut from leaking?

On leak test the water trickles down between the plastic nut and plastic tail piece. Tightened it quite a lot. The instructions say use silicone on the "flange". Is this a silicone part too? It's a pretty big rubber gasket don't understand why it is leaking so much. Well I do really. The rubber gasket goes onto a threaded plastic piece and the rubber cannot be squeezed tight enough to fill the thread voids. So the water travels down the thread along the inside of the rubber gasket.

Pretty pointless posting questions here as it took longer to log in and register than just grunting gorilla style at it. Probably would have it installed by now. So now do I choose silicone or plumbers putty and why don't they mention this in the instructions? Will be grateful for all your answers even though the project will be slap-up-johnny by then.

Answer:
Hi Drake, We are sorry that you are experiencing a problem with your pop up drain assembly installation. We recommend using silicone around the underside of the flange where it meets the sink. This creates a seal at this connection to prevent the water from leaking. If you did not silicone the flange during your installation the drain would leak as you describe. I have attached a picture showing this step D in the drain installation below.

Dave

Answer:
Hi Randy, Thank you for your question. Your Delta Monitor Faucet would not have come with the drain assembly, it would have to be purchased separately. Delta offers a trip lever drain assembly, the type with the lever on the face plate that opens and closes the drain. The drain cover would be attached with a screw. The other style tub drain we offer is the toe touch, where you push on the drain stopper to close it, and push on it again to open. The stopper assembly would unscrew. We do not offer a model that screws down to seal the tub drain.
Thanks,
Dave

How to remove a sink drain for cleaning

My bathroom sink drain does not have a horizontal rod or anything else under the sink. The drain pipe is smooth without any rods. The drain plug itself turns left or right to close or open. I do not see an example of this type on your page. We built our house in 1992. It is my wife's sink and get lots of hair in it. How can I remove it to clean the pipe? Thanks, Jim

Thank you for your question. Based on your description of your sink drain, this is not a Delta Faucet assembly. We have never had on that turned to the right or left to open and close.

Thank you for your question. If you are switching from a lift and turn drain assembly to a toe operated assembly, you will need to replace the waste plug and the drain flange. The part number for this is Delta Faucet model # RP31558. It is available in Chrome, Champagne Bronze, Polished Brass, Venetian Bronze, and Stainless Steel finishes.

Answer:
Hi Raysmascot,

I am sorry to hear about the trouble that you are having with your drain assembly, and I would be happy to help.

To adjust your drain assembly, please find the point in which the horizontal rod meets the strap with the holes in the back of the sink. Then adjust the horizontal rod so that it is in a lower hole on the strap.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you for your question. When using Delta Faucet model # RP31558RB it is not necessary to use plumber's putty but if the tub is not level, we would recommend it.

520 DRAIN ASSEMBLY W/O OVERFLOW HOLES IN DRAIN FLANGE

I have two 520 faucet assemblies and two bathroom sinks. Neither of the sinks are equipped with an overflow drain. Both of my faucets have drain flanges with holes cut to allow overflow to enter the drain. The two supplied drain flanges have roughly a 1/8" gap between the body of the porcelain drain assembly and the Delta drain flange. I believe that installing the drain flange supplied is going to leave me with water between the drain flange and the ceramic wall of the sink. This is going to present with a mold problem that will be a continuous fight to keep the mold in check.

How can I get a solid drain flange rather than the ones punched for an overflow port?

Answer:
Thank you for your question. All of our pop-up assemblies with lift rods have over flow holes. We do offer push-pop assemblies without overflow holes, and you could just leave the lift rod in the hole for decoration. The push-pop model number is Delta Faucet model # 72172. We also offer a grid strainer without overflow holes. The model number for that is Delta Faucet model # RP47648.

I have Delta shower/tub trim that I want to update with the Leland style. I'm told I will have to use a manual lift/turn to plug the drain and then a plate over the trip lever overflow valve. Doesn't Delta have a trip lever attached to the overflow valve cover on their newer products?

I want to replace Delta shower/tub fixtures with something newer.

Can I keep the trip lever-type assembly to keep water in or out of the tub? Or would I have to convert to a manual waste lift and turn type apparatus and cover it with a plate? I'm interested in going with Delta Leland, venetian bronze if this matters.

delta offers 6 varieties of the Leland you're looking for with the spout diverter. Go to Deltafaucet.com, bath faucets, tub and shower, venetian bronze and you can look at them and decide which one you like best.

Answer:
Thank you for your question. The bath waste assembly is not connected to the shower system. If you do not need or want to change the bath waste assembly when you change your trim on your tub/shower, then it is not necessary to do so. If you would like to change the bath waste assembly to match a color and you already have Delta Faucet product in the tub, then you can do that too.

but the faucet comes only with a Grid Strainer which does not accommodate an overflow drain. This combination is on display at numerous Lowes stores but it doesn't seem to work together.

Did I order the wrong faucet for a vessel that has an overflow drain? Do I return the faucet or is there some other solution?

There was no mention of this problem on the box or in the instructions.

Thank you for your question. Delta Faucet model # 17708LF does come with a grid strainer in the box. We do have a push pop drain with overflow that can be purchased separately. It is model # 72173. Most of the time, faucets that are being used with vessel sink need to have the drain assembly purchased separately.
