Frequently Asked Questions

Finish

Can drain openers cause damage to finishes?

In most cases, the finish is safe if you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and make sure the drain cleaner isn’t left on the finish for longer than 30 minutes.

Can I get a particular faucet in a different finish than what is available at the store?

Many stores can order Delta® faucets that are not stocked or displayed in the store. Ask the plumbing department manager or store manager for assistance with Delta special order.

You also can preview a large assortment of Delta models in many finishes in the Online Catalog.

What are the various finishes that are available for Delta products?

The finishes available vary from product to product, so not all products are available in all finishes. The Product Catalog section of our website will allow you to select a product, see what finishes are available for that product, and actually view the product in each of those finishes. Other than chrome, each finish has a two-letter suffix in the faucet model number. A summary of finishes and their two-letter suffix is below:

What is a Brilliance® finish?

Brilliance® finishes, designed to not corrode, tarnish or discolor for a “like-new” look for life, are developed by embedding molecules deep into the faucet’s surface, creating a bond that is virtually indestructible. This process is known as Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). Delta was the first manufacturer to offer this patented process that creates a bond that's virtually indestructible with an incredibly reflective shine. Brilliance resists abrasions and discoloration better than traditional special finishes and, in many cases, better than chrome.

In independent tests using the harshest drain cleaners, the Delta Brilliance drain retained its appearance, while its competitors did not come close. Tested with over 100 household cleaners, the abrasion resistance of the Brilliance finish can even withstand repeated scouring with steel wool. A Brilliance finish is guaranteed not to corrode, tarnish or discolor for as long as you own your home. It can even withstand prolonged exposure to harsh coastal environments.

Learn more about the Brilliance Anti-Tarnish Finish process.

What makes a Brilliance® finish unique?

Delta's Brilliance® finishes are more durable than traditional clear coating. These beautiful finishes, which give your home an instant decorator look, won't corrode, tarnish or discolor. They are designed to look like new for life. The finish was tested against more than 100 common household cleaners. Brilliance will even withstand prolonged exposure to hard water or sea air.

Why do I have pin holes in my spout?

Pin holes in a Delta faucet spout are usually caused by "dezincification," which is the removal of zinc from the brass due to salt solutions, brackish water, mildly acidic solutions and poorly grounded plumbing systems. When the zinc is removed, the copper is redeposited to these areas and the surface of the part. The redeposited copper is a weak mass that is porous and fragile.

If this has happened, you will need to replace the spout. To determine the spout part number for your faucet model, contact your Delta plumber or showroom, or e-mail us.

Why is my Polished Brass tarnishing or peeling?

Traditional Polished Brass finishes were coated with a clear coating to inhibit tarnish. Over time, this clear coat can be broken or scratched with regular wear and tear, abuse or chemical attack, causing the finish to tarnish or the coating to peel. Unfortunately, it's not possible to repair the clear coat so you will need to replace any parts of your faucet that are tarnished or badly scratched.

Why is the finish deteriorating on my faucet's spout, handles and aerator?

Normally, finish deterioration is due to years of wear and tear, abuse or chemical attack. There is no repair once the finish is damaged, however you can replace many of common faucet parts where the finish deterioration is most noticeable.

To determine the parts you need, contact your Delta plumber or showroom. You can e-mail us for assistance, or call 1-800-345-DELTA (3358).

Answer:
Hi Lisa, Thank you for your question. Always blot dry any water from faucet surface. Allowing water to evaporate on the surface can lead to build up of mineral deposits. Cleaning with a damp non-abrasive sponge and buffing it dry with a clean soft cloth should help keep your product looking beautiful. To remove water spots, use warm water and a soft, damp cloth. Hard water stains may be removed using a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Make certain that you rinse thoroughly with water afterward.

If additional cleaning is required, all of our finishes may be cleaned with the following household cleaners: Formula 409® Antibacterial All Purpose Cleaner, Fantastik® All Purpose Cleaner, or Windex® Original Glass Cleaner, when used according to the manufacturers' instructions for use.

Avoid using the following which can damage your finish:

Avoid industrial cleaners and abrasive cleaners, such as those used for toilet bowls, green Scotch-Brite heavy duty scrub sponges, Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner and Lysol Basin Tub, Soft Scrub, and Tile Cleaner.
Avoid products that state on the label that they remove tarnish and rust, and those containing hydrofluoric, hydrochloric and/or phosphoric acids and caustic agents.
Avoid harsh abrasives or polishes
Avoid bleach-based cleaners
Thanks,
Dave

Hi Jen, Thank you for your question. The LF in a faucet model stands for Lead Free it does not pertain to the faucet finish. The RB venetian bronze finish would be the same in any faucet.

What air gap finish works with Brilliance stainless

I just bought an Izak 19939-SS-DST kitchen faucet and looking for the matching color for a dishwasher air gap. I called your customer service line and told that Brilliance Nickel would match the Brilliance stainless finish on the faucet. But after reading some of the questions here, now I'm not so sure. Can you give me a second opinion on this. Thanks!

Hi Lisa, Thank you for your question. The brilliance brushed nickel has a slighty more yellow/golden hue to it than the brilliance stainless finish does. The Windemere series is offered in the chrome, oil rubbed bronze, and brilliance stainless finishes.

Answer:
Hi MRM, Thank you for your question. The two finishes are similar. The oil rubbed bronze(OB) finish is darker than the venetian bronze. The dark brown finish is prevalent. The venetian bronze(RB) finish allows more of the bronze/dark gold finish to show through.
Thanks,

Can I use new trim on old rough in?

In 1999, I installed a Delta single lever faucet with gold trim. I just bought a Delta Porter series, model 144984-BN.

Can I change the trim without changing out the original brass rough in? if not, is there a retrofit kit?

Thanks

Answer:
Hi Ellis, Thank you for your question. Your existing faucet is 1700 series faucet. You cannot use your existing rough in with the new model 144984-BN, you would have to change everything. Any faucet purchased after February 2006 would give you this option, but your 1999 model will not. You can order a new T17 series trim that will allow you to use your existing rough in. The new T17 trim (all of the external parts) will come with a new cartridge, this will not work with your existing rough, you will have to continue to use your existing cartridge or replace it with a new RP32104.
Thanks,
Dave

Answer:
Hi Trish,

Thank you for your question. There is a slight difference between the Delta Faucet Stainless Steel finish and the Delta Faucet Artic Stainless finish. Stainless Steel has a gold tone to it and is mostly used in the bath. Artic Stainless has a blue tint to it and more closely matches stainless steel appliances out in the market today. It is only used in the kitchen.

Thanks

Cleaning hard water spots on oil rubbed bronze faucets

We built a new home and had Delta's Lahara oil rubbed bronze faucets installed. We have very hard water. We wipe off water with a microfiber cloth. I know what NOT to use-but I would like to know which products are safe and effective to use on this finish. For example, can I used Windex Multisurface vinegar cleaner (amonia free) or Method All Purpose Natural Surface cleaner for everyday touch ups? What cleaners are effective on hard water spots?
