Frequently Asked Questions

Touch2O Technology

Are there any special instructions for installing a faucet with Touch2O Technology?

Start by following the step-by-step instructions in the Maintenance & Installation Sheet included with your Touch2O® Technology faucet or reference the illustrated color Quick Start Guide. To find the Maintenance & Installation Sheet online, enter your model number in the search box in the upper right corner of this page. Then select the “Product Support and Repair Parts” tab to view the Maintenance & Installation Sheet, as well as other product documentation.

The best practices noted in the Maintenance & Installation Sheet are also summarized here:

DO:

  • Use the stabilization plate provided with the faucet. (It is an insulator, which helps improve touch performance.)

    faucet stabilization plate
  • Use all other insulators—including the spout insulating element, spout insulator and spout base—provided with the faucet. (As stated in the Maintenance & Installation Sheet, there is one exception to this: The spout insulator cannot be used with thin-mounting surfaces, such as drop-in stainless steel sinks.)
  • Make sure the metal shank is at least ½” from the wall of the sink bowl or other metal objects (e.g., sink clips, metallic hoses, house wiring, etc.)

    faucet metal shank
  • Separate the LED cable (black wire with the stereo plug) as much as possible from the red spout sensor wire. Bundling these wires together will decrease touch sensitivity, while separating them will increase touch sensitivity.

    faucet wiring

We also recommend that you:

  • Place the battery pack as close to the floor of the cabinet as possible. (Place it flat on the floor for best results. This placement will help improve touch performance.)
  • Maintain a 2” clearance around the battery pack (excluding the floor of the cabinet itself).
  • Route faucet wires away from all hoses and supply lines, so they do not move when the spout is rotated or the spray wand is pulled out.
  • Avoid placing household objects (e.g., sponges, soaps, decorations, etc.) within contact of the spout or handle.

DO NOT:

  • Modify the supplied parts. (There is one exception: The stabilization plate may be cut for non-standard hole spacing.)
  • Use a power adaptor in lieu of the supplied battery pack.
  • Bundle wires together.

    bundled faucet wires

We also recommend that you DO NOT:

  • Connect the faucet or battery pack to anything that is acting as an earth ground (e.g., house wiring or water lines).
  • Install the faucet on a metal countertop. (Metal sinks are fine.)
  • Install the faucet within 4” of a metal backsplash behind the faucet.
  • Wrap wires around drains.

Can I call someone for assistance?

Yes – You can call Delta Faucet at 1-800-345-DELTA (3358).

Can I connect the faucet to a power adapter instead of using the battery pack?

Yes. All faucets purchased after 2014 ship with 6 AA batteries and will also accept 6 C batteries (not included) for longer life. An A/C power adapter (EP73954) is sold separately. If you use the A/C power adapter, it will completely power your faucet and only rely on the batteries as a back-up, should your power go out. This 3 prong adapter has been specially designed for use with faucets featuring Touch2O technology. Off-the-shelf A/C power adapters are not recommended and will void the warranty.

Do I need an electrical outlet to install?

No. Touch2O® and Touch2O.xt Technology faucets are powered by batteries, which are included in the box. An optional A/C adapter (EP73954) is available for purchase should you want to connect the faucet to a grounded, 3 prong electrical outlet.

Do I need an electrician? What about a plumber?

No. The installation process is just like installing a regular faucet with a few additional components. The faucet ships with 6 AA batteries and can be powered with 6 C batteries if you do not have a grounded outlet. An A/C adapter (EP73954) is available for purchase should you want to connect the faucet to a grounded, 3 prong electrical outlet. With DIAMOND Seal Technology, the integrated supply lines mean everything you need is included in the box.

Does Touch2O Technology work with any countertop and sink?

Yes. Touch2O technology is designed to work on all counter top and sink materials.

How do I control water flow/volume?

You control water flow manually with the handle, just as you would operate any standard faucet. When operating the faucet in “Touch” or hands-free mode, the water flow setting remains the same as the previous use.

How do I control water temperature?

You control the water temperature manually with the handle, just as you would any standard faucet. When operating the faucet in “Touch” or hands-free mode, the water temperature setting remains the same as the previous use. The LED indicator light at the base of your faucet will change color depending on the temperature of the water.

How do I know the “Touch” feature is “on”?

An LED indicator light at the base of the faucet will illuminate when the “Touch” or “Hands-free” feature is activated. If the handle is in the “off” position, water will not flow. When using a lavatory faucet with hands-free activation, the LED indicator light will pulse so you know the faucet will turn off within a few seconds when you leave. You can touch the faucet off if you want to turn off the water flow in any mode.

How do I turn it off and on?

You may choose to operate the faucet as you would any standard single-handle faucet by moving handle to the on and off positions. You may also tap it on and off with a deliberate touch, like that of a mouse click on your computer. If you have a lavatory faucet featuring Touch2O.xt Technology, the water flow is turned on by placing your hands within 4” of the faucet. To turn it off, you simply remove your hands from the 4” activation area.

How does “Touch” actually work?

Every person has a characteristic called capacitance. Capacitance is an electronic term that has units of measure called farads. Capacitors are electronic components that store electrical energy. A human body typically has 22 pico farads of capacitance. A result of this capacitance is often felt in the winter months via static discharges that occur when walking across a carpet and touching a metallic object. Walking across a carpet generates energy that is stored in the body’s capacitance. This energy is discharged when touching another object at a different voltage potential.

A capacitive touch sensor is basically a sensing device that measures capacitance in its environment. When a touch sensor is connected to the faucet, it first establishes a baseline level of capacitance. Once this is established, it then looks for an increase in capacitance that occurs when a person touches the faucet (the human body’s 22 pico farads). The sensor detects the increase in capacitance and either turns on water flow or turns off water flow. When the person releases the faucet, the decrease in capacitance is also detected.

Touches and grabs are distinguished by measuring the duration of the person touching the faucet. Touches are defined as being less than 300 milliseconds, and grabs as more than 300 milliseconds.

There are two capacitive touch sensors in faucets with Touch2O® Technology. The first touch sensor is connected to the handle and the second sensor is connected to the spout. If a touch sensor is connected to anything conductive (wire, metal sheet, metal bar, etc.) that conductive element becomes an extension of the touch sensor.

The first sensor is attached to the handle which is made of brass. Since brass is conductive, the entire handle of the faucet is a touch sensor. The second capacitive sensor is connected to the spout. As the spout is also made of brass, the spout is also a touch sensor. However, depending on what is defined as the spout, there may be two exceptions:

  1. At the base of the spout is a black plastic insulating ring. It’s function is to isolate the spout from a sink. This black ring is not touch sensitive.
  2. The pull down wand is isolated from the spout via an insulator. Because of the isolation, the pull down wand is not touch sensitive. This arrangement is intentional to provide the most intuitive operation of the faucet.

How will I know when my batteries are running low?

For faucets purchased in 2014 or earlier, the LED indicator light on the base of the faucet will start blinking red when it is time to change the batteries. For faucets purchased after 2014, the LED indicator light will flash red 3 times when the faucet is turned on and 3 times when the faucet is turned off.

I cannot find my solenoid replacement model number on Delta’s website. Is it still available?

Delta replaced all of its solenoid valves with a new version. Please see the table below for a cross reference from the older solenoid valves to the new models. Or you can reference the M&I for the new model that will replace your old solenoid valve.

I have a cross-flow of hot and cold water.

If there’s a cross-flow of hot and cold water, it could be that the check valves are not properly installed on the supply lines. Make sure the ferrules are screwed onto the check valves and that the hot and cold water lines each have a check valve installed.

If the faucet is left running, will it stop automatically?

Touch2O and Touch2O.xt Technology incorporate an automatic water flow shut-off. In the kitchen, it will shut the faucet off after four minutes if the water is left running with no activity. In the lavatory, it will shut off after one minute with no activity. Beverage faucets featuring Touch2O will shut off after one minute with no activity.

Is it easy to install?

Yes. The installation process is just like installing a regular pull-down kitchen or single handle lavatory faucet with a few additional components.

My faucet turns on and off by itself.

This is most likely related to the installation. Review the instructions to ensure that all steps were properly followed. Based on how Touch2O® Technology works, it is important to make sure that all the faucet components below the sink are not in contact with metal and are as far away from electrical components (ie: garbage disposals, dishwasher cords, etc.) and drain lines as possible. For faucets featuring Touch2O.xtTechnology, it could be sensing an object put into the 4” sensing field. After several seconds, the faucet will learn that that object is there and should operate normally.

My handle or spout does not respond to touch.

This is most likely related to the installation, low batteries, or the handle is in the “off” position.

It could also be that the user is not touching the faucet properly for best operation. Make sure the touch is not too long or too short — it should be deliberate, like striking a key on a piano. Don’t use fingernails or a dry cloth to touch the faucet.

The LED does not come on.

If the LED does not come on, it may be there’s no power. Check the batteries.

The wires to the spout LED may have been disconnected. Follow the wires down from the spout to the electronics box, double checking they are securely attached.

The light is on, but I am not getting water?

First, check to make sure your handle and water supply stops are in the “on” position. If you are still not getting water, your solenoid valve may be defective. Contact customer service for a replacement.

The stabilization plate doesn’t work with my sink. Can I cut it?

For sinks with non-standard hole spacing, it is acceptable to cut the stabilization plate to fit.

Water & electricity…isn’t that bad?

Faucets featuring Touch2O® Technology and Touch2O.xt Technology use the same touch sensing technology commonly found in smart phones today. The system operates on 6 AA or 6 C batteries, which uses a low DC voltage. The optional A/C adapter (EP73954) electrically isolates the faucet from the household electrical wiring.

What are the safety features?

When operating the faucet in “Touch” mode, an automatic shut-off feature will stop the flow of water after four minutes on kitchen faucets and one minute on lavatory faucets if the water is left running with no activity.  When using “Hands Free” mode, the Touch2O.xt™ Technology faucet will automatically shut off within 5 seconds after removing your hand.

What if my cat/kid/etc. taps it on?

Should your Touch20® or Touch2O.xt™ Technology faucet be activated accidentally, the automatic shut-off feature will stop the flow of water after four minutes on kitchens and one minute on lavatories if the water is left running with no activity.

What if there is a power outage?

Your Touch2 or Touch2O.xt Technology faucet is powered by batteries, therefore the “Touch” and/or hands-free functions will still operate during a power outage. If using the optional A/C power adapter (EP73954), the batteries act as a back-up power supply until power is restored.

What if you grab it? Will it continue to turn itself on/off?

No. Touch20® Technology is a sophisticated technology that can distinguish the difference between a tap and grasp by measuring the duration of the contact with the faucet. Touches are defined as being less than 300 milliseconds, whereas grabs are more than 300 milliseconds.

What is the meaning of the red or blue LED lights at the base of the spout?

  • Delta® TempSense Technology senses the water temperature before it leaves the spout. An LED light changes color to identify when the water has reached the desired temperature.
    • LED Temperature Color Ranges:
      • BLUE for temperatures below 80oF (26.7oC)
      • MAGENTA as the temperature rises from 80oF (26.7oC) to approximately 110oF (43.3oC)
      • RED when the water temperature is greater than 110oF (43.3oC)
    • Solid Color - Normal operation, "Touch" mode is activated.
    • Flashing Color - Normal operation, the hands-free mode is activated.
    • Low Battery Indication: The LED will display 3 red flashes when the water is turned on and again when turned off, indicating batteries need replacement. For faucets manufactured before 2015, the low battery indication is a solid red light when the faucet is activated.

What should I do with the wires under the sink?

For proper functionality, do not wrap the wires around one another. It is important to make sure that all the faucet components (including the wires) below the sink are not in contact with metal and are as far away from electrical components (ie: garbage disposals, dishwasher cords, etc.) and drain lines as possible.

What size batteries? How many? How long will they last? How do I know they need to be replaced? What if I don’t replace them in time?

Faucets featuring Touch2O® or Touch2O.xt Technology ship with 6 AA batteries. Under normal operation, these batteries will last up to two years. Faucets purchased after 2014 can also use 6 C batteries, which can last up to 5 years.

Where should I put the battery pack?

It is important to make sure that the battery pack is not in contact with metal and is as far away from electrical components (ie: garbage disposals, dishwasher cords, etc.) and drain lines as possible.

Why do I need to use the stabilization plate?

The stabilization plate acts as an insulator, which helps improve touch performance.

Why is the light on my faucet changing colors?

The faucet features TempSense Technology. This is a visual indicator of the temperature of your water.

Will a regular plumber be able to install it?

Yes. The installation process is just like installing a regular kitchen pull-down or single handle lavatory faucet with a few additional components.

Addison lavatory touchless faucet, 2012

I can't get the touchless feature to work any more. It worked for the last couple of years. I tried changing the batteries, but that didn't make it work. The batteries are fine, and the light on the faucet works. There were instructions in the manual (which I haven't been able to locate) about tapping the faucet a number of times to turn on or off the touchless feature. I have not been able to find these instructions online. I tried touching it 6 times with handle turned on. The light flashes red/blue and the light goes off. But the water stays on as a manual faucet, and doesn't go to touchless mode. My faucet was ordered in around 2012 & I believe the instructions for this are different from the newer models. Please help. I can't get it to work.

Under my sink is loaded with a dishwasher drain and braided water line in addition to the sink drain and water lines. Will it help the intermittent operation of my Touch2O to insulate the solenoid by using sheet rubber to either wrap the existing pipes or forming a sleeve around most of the 2O plumbing?

Hi Butchtoo,

I'm glad to hear that you were able to get the faucet back in working order! You can use rubber, cardboard, plastic, or wood to help isolate the wires and/or solenoid assembly.

If it is working fine, feel free to keep it as it is. However, if you run into any issues in the future, we do recommend to place the battery box on the floor of the cabinet, 2" from the sides or metal objects.

Best regards,
Jon

This is my question that I posted a day or two ago. I went ahead and ordered a 12" x 12" piece of rubber off the internet and tried insulating the metal mesh dishwasher line that was exactly where my Touch2O solonoid needed to be. I'm glad to say that it now works perfectly every time! No more intermittent stopping and starting.

Hello KR,

Thanks for your question.

Unfortunately, the Touch 2.0 Technology cannot be retrofitted to a non-Touch faucet. You would need to purchase a a Touch 2.0 Technology bar/prep faucet.

I hope this helps!
