Frequently Asked Questions

Water Temperature

How can I make sure my shower is safe?

To make sure your shower is safe, follow these tips:

  1. Install a pressure balance tub and shower valve, such as those found in the broad selection of the Delta® Monitor® series.
  2. Set the valve's adjustable rotational limit stop to prevent the temperature handle from being turned to dangerously hot levels.
  3. Carefully test the tub/shower water with your hand before bathing.

How do I set the adjustable rotational limit stop?

Follow these steps:

  1. Let the water run until both hot and cold water is fully mixed.

  2. Rotate the handle fully counterclockwise to the hottest position.

  3. Place a thermometer in a plastic tumbler, and hold the tumbler in the water stream.

    cup temp set stop

  4. If the water temperature is above what is allowed by your local plumbing code (110º F or 120º F), remove the handle on 1300/1400 series or temperature knob on 1700/1800 series, and rotate the rotational limit stop:

    1. Counterclockwise if you have a Monitor® 1300 or 1400 series model (handle controls the temperature only, not the volume). For every tooth the rotational limit stop is rotated counterclockwise, the maximum water temperature will decrease approximately 6º F. NOTE: If water temperature is too cool, rotate the limit stop clockwise.

    2. Clockwise if you have a Monitor 1700 or 1800 series model (handle controls volume; temperature knob controls temperature). For every tooth the rotational limit stop is rotated clockwise, the water temperature will decrease approximately 2º F. NOTE: If water temperature is too cool, rotate the limit stop counterclockwise.

    clockwise stop temp set

  5. For 1300/1400 series: Replace the handle. After verifying the water outlet temperature, secure the handle with the screw. Do not over tighten. For 1700/1800 series: After verifying water outlet temperature, snap temperature knob into place.

  6. MAKE SURE COLD WATER FLOWS FROM THE VALVE FIRST. MAKE SURE WATER (AT THE HOTTEST FLOW) DOES NOT EXCEED THE TEMPERATURE ALLOWED (see steps 1-4 above).

Note: Consumer safety is our number one concern. If you do not have experience with plumbing repairs, we recommend that you contact a licensed plumber for tub/shower repairs.

The water in the shower is either hot or cold; I can't get any temperature in-between. What's wrong?

The spool and sleeve, the part of the Monitor pressure balance valve that blends the hot and cold water, may not be working properly. This is often caused by mineral deposits that build up over time. To solve, follow the steps below based on your model.

Tools you may need:

temp set stop hot cold tools

  1. Shut off water supply.

    temp hot cold set stop

  2. There are two types of valves. Choose a or b below depending on your series

    1. 1300/1400 Series: Remove handle.

    2. 1700/1800 Series: Remove temperature knob, cover and handle.

  3. Twist and pull sleeve to remove it.

  4. Unscrew brass bonnet nut.

  5. Remove cartridge.

  6. Soak cartridge in a 50/50 vinegar and water solution for 24 hours to remove any mineral deposits.

NOTE: Unless both hot and cold water supplies are turned on, the pressure balance valve will allow only a dribble of water to flow through the valve.

What is the adjustable rotational limit stop?

The adjustable rotational limit stop found on Delta® Monitor® valves, allows you to set a maximum hot water temperature that flows out of the tub/shower. When set correctly, this safety feature ensures that the handle in your tub/shower faucet never goes beyond the set level, resulting in a safe bathing temperature.

It may need to be readjusted if the inlet water temperatures change. For example, during the winter, the cold water temperature is colder than it is during the summer, which could result in varying outlet temperatures. Typical temperatures for a comfortable bath or shower range from 90º F to 110º F.

How do I set the adjustable limit stop?

Follow these steps:

  1. Let the water run until both hot and cold water is fully mixed.

  2. Rotate the handle fully counterclockwise to the hottest position.

  3. Place a thermometer in a plastic tumbler, and hold the tumbler in the water stream.

What is wrong in a Monitor valve if the hot water comes on first when rotating the handle counter-clockwise?

When operating a Monitor valve, the cold water should always come on first and rotating the handle counter-clockwise should then increase temperature. If this is not the case, the water lines may have been connected in reverse. This can be corrected by "flipping" the pressure balancing cartridge.

There are two types of valves. Choose A or B below depending on your series

A. 1300/1400 Series (RP19804)

Here are the steps to follow in reversing the operation of your faucet.

  1. Before you begin, make sure that you shut off the water supply to the faucet.

  2. Remove the handle. A clear knobs will have a Phillips head screw located just under the plastic cap; a lever handle usually has a small set screw located on the side.

  3. Slide off the finished metal (chrome, polished brass, white or almond) sleeve that covers the valve.

  4. Unscrew the bonnet nut. The bonnet nut is a large brass ring and should unscrew by hand. If it is too tight, wrap a towel around the bonnet and use a pair of channel locks. Make sure that the entire valve body does not start to rotate as you do this. Remove the bonnet nut.

  5. Do not pry the valve cartridge out of the body with a screwdriver. Place the handle on the cartridge stem and rotate it counterclockwise approximately 1/4 turn after the stop has been contacted. Remove the handle. Grasp the brass stem in the center of the white plastic assembly and pull it directly out, away from the wall. The valve cartridge should slide out of the body.

  6. Reinstall the cartridge after rotating the entire unit 180 degrees. Make sure that the raised plastic stop, marked HOT, is on the right side of the valve.

  7. Reattach the bonnet nut, trim sleeve, and handle.

B. 1700/1800 Series (RP32104 or RP32106)

Here are the steps to follow in reversing the operation of your faucet.

  1. Before you begin, make sure that you shut off the water supply to the faucet.

  2. Make sure the water supplies are turned off.

  3. Remove the sleeve, bonnet and cartridge. Pull the cap from the cartridge and rotate it 180 degrees or one half turn. Reinstall the cap on the cartridge.

  4. Reinstall the cartridge making sure that the key is fully engaged with the slot in the brass body. Be sure the HOT SIDE marking on the cartridge is facing toward the right.

  5. Install the bonnet and sleeve making sure the O-Ring is behind the groove on the brass valve body.

  6. Install the volume control handle with the lever to the right, then turn the handle to the ON position. Install the temperature control knob and rotate it to the left. The water should be hotter the further you rotate it to the left.

When or why does the rotational limit stop need to be readjusted?

The adjustable rotational limit stop found on Delta® Monitor® valves, allows you to set a maximum hot water temperature that flows out of the tub/shower. When set correctly, this safety feature ensures that the handle in your tub/shower faucet never goes beyond the set level, resulting in a safe bathing temperature

It may need to be readjusted if the inlet water temperatures change. For example, during the winter, the cold water temperature is colder than it is during the summer, which could result in varying outlet temperatures. Typical temperatures for a comfortable bath or shower range from 90º F to 110º F.

See information on setting the adjustable limit stop.

Why can't I get enough hot water out of my shower, tub or tub/shower valve?

If hot water supply or temperature is not a problem elsewhere in your house, then it is likely that you have a Delta® Monitor® pressure balance valve. This valve contains an adjustable Rotational Limit Stop, a small plastic device designed to reduce the risk of scalding. You may adjust the temperature yourself by carefully following the instructions below for adjusting the Rotational Limit Stop.

Follow these steps:

  1. Let the water run until both hot and cold water is fully mixed.

  2. Rotate the handle fully counterclockwise to the hottest position.

  3. Place a thermometer in a plastic tumbler, and hold the tumbler in the water stream.

Important points to remember:

  • See illustrations to reduce outlet temperature.

  • Make sure cold water flows from the valve first and does not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit at the hottest flow.

  • According to industry standards, the maximum allowable temperature of water exiting the valve should not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit. (Temperature may vary in your area.)

  • After adjusting water temperature, place a thermometer in a plastic tumbler and hold the tumbler in the water stream to test the temperature. Do not test with hands or any body part.

  • If your water supply or temperature is unacceptable throughout your house, you probably need to adjust the temperature on your water heater. We recommend you follow the instructions of your water heater manufacturer. Typically, water heaters should be set in the "moderate" range, especially if you have small children.

Why does Shower temperature varies with water volume?

I have a series 1700 shower with the RP46463 valve. With the temp setting max and the water volume max, the shower is hot. Changing only the volume of water also changes the temp so that the water is too cold for comfort.

Why does the volume change the temperature? This is the second valve with the same result in the past 8 months. (New at that time.)

Thanks.

Answer:
Thank you for your question. When moving your volume to a lower setting, if you go below 1 gpm at 80 psi, your temperature will get colder. You can lower the volume slightly and the temperature will not change as long as you don't go below 1 gallon per minute.

If I need a cartridge, which one? Is it available at most Home Depots or Lowes? How do I take the old one off? I don't see a model number and the contractor did not leave literature. It was installed in 1996.

Answer:
Thank you for your question. Based on your first description, you have a 1300/1400 series faucet. If you have an R10000 multi-choice rough-in valve in the wall, you can upgrade to the 1700 series by ordering whichever trim you would like to choose. If you do not have the multi-choice valve in the wall, then you cannot upgrade to the 1700 series faucet without replacing the valve.

Hot water side squeals and low pressure on new faucet

I bought a 10901lf kitchen faucet with the side sprayer and after installing I get little water pressure and a squeal on the hot water side. The cold water comes out fine. I replaced the shut off to the hot water but that did not help, neither did replacing the supply lines nor doing a rebuild.

Go from 1500/1700 to 1300/1400

I see a lot of information online about how to convert from a 1300/1400 cartridge (for single control) to a 1500/1700 cartridge (for dual temperature and water pressure control). However, I do not see any information for the reverse scenario. Is there a way to convert the valve that has been used for the 1500 series cartridge to one that uses the 1400 series cartridge?

Answer:
Thank you for your question. Because the valve assembly is the same size for the 1500 and 1700, it is an easy transfer to the 1700. However the valve size is different for the 1400 and cannot be used to convert a 1500 faucet to a 1400. The valve will also need to be replaced. We recommend Delta Faucet model R10000-UNBX. This can be used with the 1300/1400 series, the 1700 series, or the 17T series.

Answer:
Hi Joe,

Without knowing the model number, I can only provide basic information.

Most showerheads should put out around 2.5 GPM if the incoming water pressure to the home is between 60 and 80 PSI. If you have lower water pressure, the output of the showerhead will be less.

If you have 60-80 PSI and are not getting 2.5 GPM, you may need to flush the valve.

To do this, please turn the water off to the faucet and remove the handle and internal parts under the handle. Close the shower curtain or shower door and turn the water back on. Let the water run for 30-45 seconds, turn the water off and reassemble the faucet.

How to fix a tub faucet (RP17454)?

This is a pull down diverter faucet to change from tub fill to shower by pulling down. As I pull down, however, the water flow is halted at the faucet and does not resume at the shower head. It shuts the system down. After the water pressure has lowered, I am able to push the valve?? back up into the faucet and use it as a tub fill only. Did something disconnect? I can't find breakdowns of that system.
