Thank you for your question. Here are some steps that should help you remove the stopper. Under the sink, you should have a rod that comes from the back of the sink out towards you and goes into the drainpipe. You should be able to see a nut where the rod enters the drainpipe. You will need to unscrew this nut. Once you have unscrewed the nut, you will then be able to pull the rod from the drainpipe. After you remove the rod, you should be able to lift the stopper up and out of the drain assembly.
When reassembling the unit, you can also put the rod back in the pipe first and screw the nut back on before you put the stopper back in. You can then drop the stopper back down into the hole. You may have to turn the stopper a certain way to get it to drop back down far enough. This will allow you to be able to remove the stopper without first removing the horizontal rod. This is will make it much easier for removing and cleaning the stopper in the future.
