Thank you for your question, Larry. For most installations, we would recommend mounting the valve to a stringer in the wall. If you are unable to do so, you can use the escutcheon plate from the trim kit and the plaster guard to "sandwich" the wall for added stability.
If you will not have the trim kit when the valve is installed, we would recommend the R10000-UNBXT, which will include a thin-wall mounting kit. We recommend using the plaster guard to cut the hole in the wall, and in a thin-wall installation the plaster guard should be behind the wall.
