Design with Brian Patrick Flynn

When it comes to DIY for beginners, how do you know where to start? What trends are up and coming? To help guide your next project, we spent some time with interior designer Brian Patrick Flynn of HGTV fame. He shared top tips and advice on tackling DIY projects and talked about which designers he looks to for inspiration for his own projects.

Q: What trends for kitchen and bath decor do you see on the horizon?

A: More decorated, collected looks that give wet spaces more of a living room, mud room or family room vibe. A mix of really unique plumbing fixtures with more found object style pieces in place of cabinetry, and a mix of timeless and a mix of timeless finishes with fresh, understated colors like Matte Black or Champagne Bronze.

Q: What are some good DIY projects for a beginner to tackle?

A: I love the idea of investing in a great plumbing fixture and then transforming a vintage desk, console table or credenza into a vanity. Since flea markets and antique stores usually have many to choose from, this is a small investment and really it’s only about spending some of your weekend outfitting the piece for a sink up top and P-trap and plumbing parts in the back. I’m also a fan of elevating a box of a bathroom into a more memorable space with a unique wooden ceiling treatment such as V-groove pine painted a light and airy color.

See how Bre of BrePurposed Design Studio transformed her bathroom with the help of a vintage mid-century credenza:

Q: What is the most impressive DIY project you’ve seen?

A: Interior designer and blogger Jenny Komenda’s bathroom with a repurposed farmhouse-style trough used as a sink and her own bathroom with shiplap walls she did herself.

Q: What’s your advice for a first-time DIYer who doesn’t know where to begin?

A: Invest in great tools you’ll use again and again. I cheaped out when I first started working in design, and I found my projects suffering by not having the right tools for installing elements.

Q: What personal design project are you most proud of?

A: I’m most proud of my line of interior lighting that I launched this year. It’s the first time I have designed product and I am thrilled with the results.

Q: Who has influenced your design work the most?

A: Thomas O’Brien is my interior design and product design hero, and I am also a huge fan of everything Emily Henderson does.
