The HGTV® Dream Home 2020 is inspirational inside and out. Sitting pretty in the Lowcountry of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the home exudes traditional Southern charm but also has a sleek elegance from contemporary design touches and innovative elements, resulting in a truly original home.
See how design and innovation meet beautifully in three rooms of the house, with advice from Brian Patrick Flynn, the designer of this year’s HGTV Dream Home.
Design and Innovation in the Kitchen
The spacious kitchen and breakfast nook open to the great room, which opens to the foyer and front door, creating an unobstructed flow through the heart of the main level. In the center of the kitchen stands an island, a true focal point, where Flynn’s choice for the sink faucet shines brightly. The Trinsic® Pro pull-down kitchen faucet, with its industrial-looking spring spout and brilliant chrome finish, adds a modern touch to the tranquil space.
“I like the idea of taking calm, coastal tones from the Lowcountry surroundings and using them for cabinet door fronts, countertop materials and also backsplash tile,” Flynn says. “Here, I stuck with sand tones reminiscent of the Hilton Head Island beaches for the cabinetry, rich navy for the backsplash, and then used a crisp white stone for the counters.”
The kitchen faucet’s modern look is matched by innovation. It features VoiceIQ™ Technology, which pairs with a connected home device, allowing the user to command the faucet to turn on and off, warm the water, dispense a metered amount or fill custom containers, like a coffee pot, all with hands-free voice activation.
For Flynn, an innovation like this naturally fits a person’s lifestyle in a beautifully designed home.
“Connected technology like a voice-activated faucet heightens the practicality and user-friendliness of design elements in a home,” he says. “Being able to fill up a pan or pot or pitcher without having to stand at the sink allows a homeowner to tackle other needs and free up their hands, and being more productive at home is a common dream.”
Design and Innovation in the Bathroom
Flynn calls the master bath “a real showstopper.” Enter the space, and you’ll see why: It boasts a freestanding tub, a double vanity, a walk-in shower and soaring 11-foot ceilings.
Flynn chose a black and white graphic tile to wrap the whole shower area and span behind the double vanity. The bold, bohemian look is a stark departure from the sunset-inspired subtle pink wall color on the other side.
The finish of the bathroom fixtures—elegant Champagne Bronze™—expertly marries these contrasting elements. The brushed gold tone warms up the modern lines of the Trinsic single-handle faucet at each sink and adorns the shower fixtures, too: four body sprays, two shower heads and a hand shower.
Amid all of these luxurious water sources, the pendant raincan shower head stands out, not only for its striking design but also for its innovation. Hanging directly overhead, the shower head creates a spa-like experience: Water-powered LED accent lights emit a subtle glow to provide soothing ambiance, while H2Okinetic® PowerDrech® Spray sculpts water into a unique pattern that feels like 3X more water than a standard spray.*
Design and Innovation in the Laundry and Mudroom
In the HGTV Dream Home 2020, having a mudroom makes a lot of sense. People and pets coming in from the pool or the beach can head right to that area to clean off before entering the rest of the house.
A pet-washing station, featuring an In2ition® Two-in-One Shower, is a welcome innovation. The detachable hand shower can be used separately from or simultaneously with the shower head.
“I see the In2ition Two-in-One Shower being used heavily for washing the family dog easily and also for thoroughly rinsing off after dips in the ocean or active days out kayaking along the marsh,” Flynn says.
Beyond the functionality, of course, the space is beautiful. Lighter tones—such as gray and white graphic wall tile, gray and white marbled porcelain floors and taupe and white grained cabinets—let the boldness of the black faucets, undermount sinks and cabinet hardware stand out. The refreshing green of the walls, Roman shades and potted plants suits the coastal style.
