You probably don’t think about fruit flies until they’re in your kitchen, and then you think of little else. These tiny pests are attracted to all sorts of things that we keep in our homes, and getting rid of them can be tricky. Here are four easy ideas from our friends at Southern Living for getting rid of fruit flies in your home.
- Apple Cider Vinegar Trap
Gather a small bowl, a piece of plastic wrap big enough to cover it, a pencil, a rubber band and apple cider vinegar. Add vinegar to the bowl and cover it tightly with the plastic wrap. Secure the wrap around the bowl with the rubber band. Poke holes in the plastic wrap with the pencil.
The apple cider vinegar will attract the fruit flies, enticing them to climb through the holes, and they will be unable to escape.
- The Cone Method
Put some ripe fruit in a tall glass and gather scissors and a paper cone (you can make your own with a sheet of paper and a piece of tape). Add just enough water to the glass of fruit that some of the fruit is above the water’s surface. Cut the tip from the bottom of the cone and place it in the glass, making sure the cone doesn’t touch the liquid.
The ripe fruit will attract flies, which will then become trapped in the glass.
- Red Wine and Dish Soap Technique
Add a few tablespoons of red wine and dish soap to a small bowl. Mix them together. The dish soap lowers the wine’s surface tension and the flies will drown when they land on it.
- Lemon and Oven Hack
Place two lemon halves in the oven and leave them overnight with the door cracked. In the morning, shut the door and turn on the broiler for a few minutes. Turn off the heat and let the lemons cool completely before opening the oven. Clean the bottom of the oven.
