REVIEWS
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth Sailing Following a Careful Disassembly I rebuilt our 1987 acrylic knob Series 600 shower valve using the RP54870 Conversion Kit (in Chrome finish). As per "Chris H" review, I had also bought an RP77739A kit "just in case", as we had the diamond-shaped stem that he mentions. However, I found we did not need the additional kit to complete our repair as the ball included in the RP54870 Kit worked just fine for our application. A note of caution - many people have posted online about how they broke the shower valve body when attempting to remove the old Cap Assembly (5) because it was stuck. Apparently it's not difficult to twist and break or distort some hidden tubes which are part of the valve body inside the wall. I was fortunately able to unscrew our Cap Assembly quite easily. In fact, I checked it by giving it a quarter turn before ordering new parts. Once the parts arrived, I shut off the water supply and carefully disassembled everything. After disassembly, I wiped down and inspected the metal valve body, including two (stainless steel?) sleeves in the body which house the Seats and Springs (10). I checked for burrs, scratches, deposits, corrosion, or foreign matter. I removed some minor mineral deposits on the exterior threads by wiping them with a cloth. I applied plumber's grease to all new rubber parts, including the Seats and Springs (10). I carefully inspected them after installing to make sure they were fully inserted into the sleeves before attempting the next step. I fit the included Conversion Ball (8) with the 4 Holes (Up) and the Large Single Hole (Down), just as the instructions illustrate. When installing the new Cam and Lip seal (9) over the Conversion Ball, I found that the dark gray plastic seal housing had to be oriented properly to match a raised rib on the plastic with a slot on the right side of the metal valve body's threaded section. Following reassembly, the refurbished valve works very well. It operates smoothly and allows us to select a broad range of temperatures. Hopefully we can enjoy good service for a few more decades now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Misleading instructions The instructions are misleading: RP54870SS doesnt work with existing installations and Delta faucets with #212 ball with diamond stem. I needed to buy Delta RP77739A kit to get it to work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Misleading "H" and "C" markings on the plate I purchased RP54870SS to retrofit my old Delta leaking faucet. I folowed the instructions and the installation went good (no leaks), but when I turned the handle clockwise where "C" (cold) mark on the plate is, the hot water came out. When I turned the handle counterclockwise to "H" marking the cold water came out...I checked the instruction and section 9 says: " 9. Verify that hot water comes out of the valve when the lever handle is turned fully clockwise." So I did it corectly. There's a discrepancy between the plate markings and the valve operation. I'll give 2 stars for the quality materials through and I'm looking for stickers with "H" and "C" to correct the plate markings to match the valve operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keep an old Delta 600 shower valve setup alive Perfectly designed to refurb the old Delta 600 tub and shower valve, provided that you can get the previous parts to come loose. All the visible parts are metal, rather than plastic. Yeah! Warning: Getting the old outermost metal cap unscrewed from the valve body can be difficult because of corrosion. Forcing it loose with hard pressure using a wrench will cause a disastrous water leak behind the valve, inside the wall, and unless your house is unusual, the only way to stop the leak will be to shut off the water to the entire house. Then you will be faced with having to get into the wall and replace the entire valve and valve body. Your refurbishing kit will not fit the new valve, since it is designed to fit the old valve. So, then you will have to also buy a new trim kit in addition to the valve body and new valve. (Tip: When I had this problem some years ago, I installed shutoffs for the shower lines while the water was turned off, so that the water could be turned on to the rest of the house. But then my water lines were available for access in the basement. Without such access, you'll have to cut a hole in a wall or ceiling to get at the water lines.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delta faucet 600 series replacement. This Delta replacement faucet handle for 600 series faucet is a great upgrade. Also the instructions are written so almost any one can do the replacement.
Date published: 2023-08-28
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Delta discontinued important components I sent photos of my existing trim to Delta, and this was recommended as the replacement. Unfortunately, the escutcheon plate is not the deep kind in my existing trim, and the kind in this kit is not deep enough. Even more unfortunately, Delta *discontinued* the deep escutcheon plates. So what could have been a simple shower upgrade project within my carefully saved budget now will not happen, because I would have to remove and redo my entire shower - including permits to change the plumbing to work with shallower escutcheon plates. This poor review does not reflect on the Delta customer service reps, who tried to be helpful. It is only about the incredibly inconsiderate decision by Delta to discontinue the deep escutcheon plates with no regard for their customers.

Q&A

Our original Delta shower faucet installed in 2001is model N1424-74.  We are doing some upgrades and need to know if Delta conversion kit RP5487ORB is compatible

Asked by: DJFRED4
Hello DJFRED4, Thank you for your inquiry! The Delta Renovation Kit RP54870RB is designed for a 600 series ball valve unit. However, any of our trim kits that start with a T13 or a T14 will interchange for your older Classic N1424-74 model, without replacing the valve, in the wall. Best regards, Tanya

Asked by: nancyggo
Thank you for your question, nancyggo! The RP54870 Renovation kit is currently only offered in Chrome, Stainless Steel or Venetian Bronze. We no longer manufacture trim kits for the 600 series and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Best regards, Edward

With a push/pull diverter? I think installed around 1987.

Asked by: rick
Thank you for your question, Rick! The RP54870 conversion kit will only work with an older valve if you cap the push button diverter with the RP2865 plug and add a diverting tub spout. If you simply wish to renovate your 600 series, the RP6046 escutcheon plate along with all other components can be purchased separately in order to continue using the push button diverter. https://www.deltafaucet.com/parts-product-detail?modelNumber=RP6046 Best regards, Edward

Why does this conversion kit not have an adjusting ring for the cap?

Asked by: Gene
Thank you for your question, Gene! The adjusting ring was a part used to add pressure down on the older cam assemblies. The newly designed cam and packing assembly is thicker as can not work with an adjusting ring installed in the cap. Best regards, Edward

is this a Delta 600 series

I just want to replace the escutcheon, screws and knob. I'm not sure that I have a 600 series and whether it is the "deep" model. It certainly looks deep to me. I'm attaching photos. Thanks
Asked by: Shirley
Thank you for your question. Based on the pictures, this is a 600 series faucet. We do offer a renovation kit for the 600 to upgrade the model. The kit includes everything but the showerhead, arm and flange. It also does not include a tub spout if needed. The model number is Delta Faucet model # RP58470 and is available in Chrome, Venetian Bronze, and Stainless Steel finishes.

Has Delta reversed the "H" and "C" symbols on the escutcheon to clear up confusion as to which way to turn the handle to get hot water?

2 of the reviews noted the position of the H and C symbols as confusing. Don't know when those reviews were written, but I'm considering purchase of this item in May of 2015.
Asked by: Vicki
Hi Vicki, Thank you for your question. When the RP54870 renovation kit is installed, the lever handle continues to work the same as how the original knob handle operated. You lift up to turn the water on, cold is to the right, and hot is to the left. This matches the H/C on the escutcheon. The confusion is that the bottom of the lever portion of the handle is now pointing the opposite way. It may help to picture this as a single handle kitchen faucet that has cold back and to the right and hot back and to the left. Thanks, Dave

Handle rotation

With my current shower I must push the shower handle up to get the water to run and then twist it to change the temperature. If I use this conversion kit will I still need to pull the handle up to start the water flow or will I just twist the handle to start and stop the water flow like with other showers?
Asked by: Simon
Thank you for your question. Using Delta Faucet model # RP54870 will not change the way you operate the faucet. You will still need to push up the lever and then turn it to the left or right.

Does this 600 series offer a tub spout diverter, either in a kit or separate? If not, what's the best match?

Asked by: Dianne57
Thank you for your question, Dianne57! The RP54870RB renovation kit does not include a tub spout. The 600 series originally used models such as RP19895 or RP5834, RP17453 for a pull down diverter option, however these are not offered in the same finish. Below is a list of tub spouts available in the Venetian Bronze finish but you will need to know what type of pipe is being used before choosing a model. https://www.deltafaucet.com/bathroom/bathing/tub--shower-faucets?categories=Delta_Bathroom_Bathing_Tub+and+Shower+Faucets_Tub+Spouts&facetFinish=venetianbronze Best regards, Edward

What is the flow rate of the new 600 series shower kit.

I replaced the old 600 series (circa 1996) with a new 600 series shower kit. Flow volume seems to be much less than the old kit. Is that by design or did I install it wrong.? I replaced the original shower head with a h20 kenitic trinsic raincan. The shower head says 2 gpm. Can i use the old ball and stem with the new renovation handle??/
Asked by: kmp282
Dear Kmp282, Thank you for your question. The flow rate is determined by the shower head that is used. However, will provide plenty of flow to run a 2.5 GPM shower head at 60 PSI. You may have some debris trapped in the valve body or supplies that is blocking the water flow. We would recommend flushing the unit. Here are the steps for flushing: Remove the shower head. Attach a hose to the shower arm nipple. Remove the handle and internal parts and turn on the hose and allow to flush for a minute or so. Reinstall all parts and test the unit. Best regards, Tanya

Yes or no: 1. can this be done without access from behind wall? 2. without removing tiles?

I need to replace a 600 series with push button diverter with new faucet and I know I need the plug for the hole where diverter was and I need a new tub spout with diverter. I think I'm clear that replacing faucet and adding plug can be done without access from behind and no tile removal, but I'm not clear that new tub spout with diverter can be installed without access from behind and without tile removal. please clarify.
Asked by: junk mail
Hi Junkmail, Thank you for your question. If you are planning on installing RP54870 you should be able to do this without access from behind the wall or removing your tiles. Everything installs on the wall or through the front of the unit. You are correct that you will need to change to a spout with diverter.Installation of the tub spout may vary depending on how it was originally installed but you still can accomplish this from outside the wall. The part number of the plug for the push button diverter is RP2865. Thanks, Dave

Is this kit available in Oil Rubbed Bronze? If not, how do I get the shower head, pipe and down spout to match.

Asked by: Michael
Thank you for your question. Delta Faucet model # RP54870RB is the Venetian Bronze finish. It will most closely match the Oil Rubbed Bronze finish. You then will need to pick out a showerhead, tub spout, and showerarm and flange with model numbers that contain RB on the end so it will all match.

I bought 3 RP54870RB 600 series renotation kits, after installation the hot and cold water is backwards. Can I fix this?

Asked by: Judy
Thank you for your question. When upgrading with Delta Faucet RP54870RB if you already had a lever handle on your faucet, we recommend not using the conversion ball that is included with the new kit. If you had a crystal ball and have now switched to a lever handlel using the conversion ball included with your kit, your hot and cold may not be switched. The lever handle turns so that the top of the handle points to the temperature of the water. When the hot water is on, the bottom of the lever will be pointing to the right. When the cold water is on, the bottom of the lever will be pointing to the left.
