What is the Delta RP64764 spring used for? Is it a necessary part? What happens if the spring is not used? I recently replaced the cartridge and the spring was broken and was not replaced. I have to push the handle right for cold water

The spring goes on the cartridge stem before installing the cap and handle. The spring helps the handle to be sensitive to touch.
