Alternatively, a 3 setting diverter trim could be installed above the main valve along with a diverting tub spout. The difference between the 3 setting and the 6 setting diverter is the number of water flow options available to divert water between different shower devices- such as body sprays, shower heads, or hand shower units. A 3 setting diverter can be used to divert the water flow between 2 different devices. One example of how a 3 setting unit could be plumbed is as follows: Setting 1- Turns on a shower head (device 1). Setting 2- Turns on a hand shower( device 2) Setting 3- Turns on the shower head and the hand shower (device 1 & 2) A 6 Setting diverter can be used to divert the water between 3 different devices. One example of how a 6 setting unit could be plumbed is as follows: Setting 1- Turns on a shower head (device 1) Setting 2- Turns on the body sprays (device 2) Setting 3- Turns on a hand shower (device 3) Setting 4- Turns on the shower head and the hand shower (device 1& 3) Setting 5- Turns on the shower head and the body sprays (device 1 & 2) Setting 6- Turns on the body sprays and the hand shower (device 2 & 3) For the number of shower devices you are looking at installing it would be recommended to use the 6- setting diverter.
