Do I have to purchase a universal valve to have this unit work? Will the unit work with out the new valve?

Hi Lisa, thank you for your interest in the T14259-LHD-R! Yes, the trim will be compatible with the old valve, but the cartridge included with the new trim is not compatible with the old valve.
